How to Buy a Used Phone Safely in Pakistan

August 11, 2026buying-guidesafety

Buying a used phone can save you a significant amount over a new one, but it comes with real risks — stolen handsets, blocked IMEIs, and sellers who disappear after taking an advance. A few checks before you pay cover almost all of them.

Check the IMEI before you meet up

Every phone has a unique IMEI number, visible by dialing *#06# or in Settings → About Phone. Before you travel to see a listing, ask the seller for it and check:

  • PTA status — an unregistered or blocked IMEI won't get network service on local SIMs after the compliance deadline. Verify via the PTA DIRBS system.
  • Blacklist status — a phone reported lost or stolen will show as blacklisted, even if it otherwise works fine on WiFi.

If a seller is reluctant to share the IMEI before you meet, treat that as a warning sign, not a formality you can skip.

Inspect the phone in person

  • Screen and body — check for micro-cracks, a loose back panel, or a screen that doesn't match the phone's stated age.
  • Battery health — iOS shows this under Settings → Battery → Battery Health; most Android phones expose it in a diagnostics menu or via a battery-health app.
  • Buttons, cameras, charging port, and biometrics — test everything on the spot, not just the one thing you were told to check.
  • Factory reset — ask the seller to reset the phone in front of you if it isn't already, and make sure it isn't locked to their Google or Apple account (Find My Device / Find My iPhone must be off).

Meet safely

  • Choose a public place, during the day.
  • Bring someone with you if you're carrying cash for a higher-value phone.
  • Never send an advance payment to secure a listing you haven't seen — this is the single most common scam pattern.

Watch for prices that don't add up

A price well below the going rate for that model and condition is usually not a bargain — it's bait. Compare against a few similar listings in your city before assuming you've found a deal.

Buying and selling on iswap.pk connects you directly with the other person — there's no escrow or shipping in between, so these checks are the part that actually protects you. See our Help Center for more on staying safe when you buy or sell.
